An Update from India Gospel League
For several years our pastors and believers have faced persecution from Hindu radicals throughout India (approved by and encouraged by the current ruling party, the BJP). Some of the states even have anti-conversion laws making it a crime to share the gospel with another person. The state of Karnataka is one of those states where our pastors have been beaten, harassed and their church buildings vandalized by radical Hindu groups. But God has opened the doors to bring about a more secular government in this state. Because of that, we were able to build and openly dedicate two new Life Centers where people can gather and worship freely. Though the word secular here in the States often means anti-Christian; in India secular means religious freedom. More and more, India is seeing officials being elected who are for freedom of religion and against the radical Hindu ways. This was clearly seen in the recent Indian national election where the current ruling party, the BJP, lost many seats. Though persecution and attacks are still happening we are thankful that the eyes of many people are being opened and the tide is slowly turning.
A beautiful example of this change comes from the testimony of an older woman who grew up as a Hindu:
Sister Tulsa came to know Christ later in life through a neighbor. For most of her life, she was a devout Hindu. She shared, “After hearing the gospel, God worked in my heart. I started attending church and accepted Jesus as my Savior. Despite being unable to read or write, I participated in the women’s fellowship at my church, listened to the Word of God, and implemented it in my life. I never thought I could become a leader without formal education or knowledge. However, God has worked through me, and I have led many women to Christ. I am still learning and growing in the role that God has given me, but I praise the Lord for my new life.”
